Five Myths About Club Director Training
It always amazes me how many club directors do not do any training in governance (except in NSW where its is compulsory by law).
There seems to be 5 myths about why they do not do it:
If you think about these 5 myths none of them are good enough excuses. Once you agree to be elected to your club board you have an obligation to make the time for the role, including training. The cost of it will be paid by the club, not you. Whatever your experience, you DO need training in how to govern a club with changing legislation and rules. If you try to do it yourself, how will you do that if you don’t know what you don’t know? It can hurt you personally if you don’t know what you are supposed to know, ignorance is no defence at law.
I have met Chairs who have no idea about leading a board/committee but never attend any training. They should be doing training to set the example. No more excuses like “I had something else on” when it was scheduled months before, or “there is nothing wrong at our club, so I won’t go”. There is always nothing wrong until there is.
Today there is a large amount of club director training resources available, either face to face, online, or in books. Club Associations all provide governance training, and commercial providers offer videos and online reading material at little cost. Do not let the 5 myths catch you out!
