Its Not What You Know But Who You Know

Its Not What You Know

I read recently that an astonishing 65% of current Board appointments gained these from personal connections. If you are looking to become a Non-Executive Director, ask yourself: which of all my connections are valuable and how can I ask them to refer me to board opportunities?

They say 15% of board appointments come from “strong” personal connections (people you see regularly) but 80% come from “weak” personal connections (maybe only have their business card). Make a list of everyone you know and contact them to let them know you are looking for a board appointment and send them your CV with a personal letter to thank them for keeping you in mind to recommend you directly to a board.

This is about making personal contact and not attending “networking events”, take the time to build relationships. Of course, board recruiters have a role to play, but remember they are the gatekeeper to their client, and you are competing with many other applicants.

Become one of the 65% of current directors who were recommended by someone they knew, and who was aware of what you know, and can do.
